Prevention of Insomnia

Many people, especially the elderly, complain about insomnia. By following a healthy lifestyle, insomnia can be prevented. But this may not always be practicable especially in the modern busy life with full of tension and stress. However, a balanced diet, proper rest and recreation, regular exercise and stress management can reduce the risk of insomnia. It is better to have a large meal during the day and a small meal in the evening. You should not take a large meal before going to bed. A glass of warm milk before going to bed will help soothe the nervous system. Milk contains calcium which calms the nerves. It is beneficial if you take a warm water bath an hour before bedtime as it help alters the body’s core temperature and helps you to fall asleep easily. Other activities which help to relax and induce sleep are reading, meditation and taking a leisurely walk before bedtime. Many people listen to music to calm their nerves which in turn will help promote sleep.
